Educational Excellence is a spiritual entity that focuses on heightening an individual’s awareness of the self, as we know it, and how to continue to identify, nurture and enrich our life experiences. Some time ago, I had some personal challenges and I was not aware where they had come from nor what I had to do to manage them. Then, I began to embrace the simple Socratic motto: “Know Thyself”! May we continue on this journey together, constantly becoming aware of ourselves and each other!

Here we are, WorldPress! Educational Excellence is beginning the “Stop The Violence!” movement here in South Florida to stimulate awareness of “self” in relationship to others and peers. Young people must focus on learning how to communicate in an appropriate fashion intellectually and avoid at ALL COSTS the need to resort to violence in ANY communications.

Now that there have been so many cases of youth on youth violence here in South Florida, and, many other parts of the USA, parents, school administrators, police departments and the well known youth organizations like the Urban Leagues and Boys and Girls Clubs must continue to step up to the plate and refuel programs to teach youth how to manage anger.

I need some of you to chime in on this blog, so to speak. You can refer me to articles or events even publications that you feel may benefit my work with Stop The Violence. Needless to say, it is worldwide … but since we live here, maybe we can start here. This Saturday, I had the pleasure of working with a group of young men who I will call The Serious Seven that were assigned community service through Mr. Deru Franks, Program Director for the Urban League of Broward County’s At Risk component. He invited me to speak on Anger Management, and, of course, me being me, threw in a skit and addressed the spiritual element of managing ones anger with prayer. Now, my mother used to tell me to recite the 23rd Psalm when life wasn’t going exactly right. In one of my 12 Step Programs, I learned the Serenity Prayer, which I have on my bedroom wall with clasped hands in remembrance of my mother’s sister, Drucilla Billups, out of Tampa, FL. So between those two prayers, I am able to come down a few notches and de-escalate my sometimes aggressive nature! Amen. We shared some heart to heart stories and as young men, they were very focused. We want to spread this campaign and may end up going door to door in some neighborhoods to get some attention! Whatdoyouthink?!

I agree 100%, that prayer is a gift from our almighty God that was given for free for those who earnestly seek him, where it helps an individual, is when faith manefest itself with works or action..
In my generation of the 70’s 80’s we were more task oriented, we didn’t need motivation or lecture to pursue educational goals, and scholastic achievements.
Today however, our youth strive for structure, but the system has become so cost and politically conscious, that they fail the youth in providing the necessary structured tools, that can make them succesful, and productive members of society in this modern age…..
I was fortunate to not only have great teachers and or mentors, such as Mr. John I. Cook, Russel Bailey, the late Sandra Burno to name a few, I was fortunate that the system recognized that at the pinnacle of the civil rights movement, my generation would not prosper in anyway what so ever, unless the instruction we recieved was real, provocative,and conducive to the politics, social conscious, and needed leadership to guide our generation..
The aforementioned names ( John I. Cook, Russel Bailey, the late Sandra Burno) personified those qualities, that are a lost generation of teachers and or instructors..
I will support this blog,because I am passionate in my quest in helping the youth to receive the proper leadership, in order for them to be guided on the straight path of success..

You were indeed a lucky student. I was blessed to teach with all three teachers you mentioned. Such energy and devotion to their task! An what an example to the students in terms of what a minority student could achieve.

Thanks so much, Tim! You know, those of us who were fortunate enough to land teaching jobs in White Plains back in the late 70’s – early ’80’s. Most of all, we had the pleasure of growing along side some fine young people, learning to be role models, and taking our places there. May God rest Sandra Burno, Russ Bailey is living in retirement in Lake Mary, FL, I don’t know where Sharon Greene, Dan Woodard, and Harry Jefferson are … and I am still hanging tough! Thanks for putting your stamp on my blog.
